Remote FAT reduces risk of COVID-19 infection for Saipem and Innovo teams

Pipe push-up device FAT via Microsoft Teams.

Client: Saipem
Project: Pipe push-up device FAT
Location: Innovo facility in Padova, Italy

The challenge

Before a key component of an onshore reel drive system, a pipe push-up device, could be supplied to our client Saipem for installation on site, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) had to be conducted.

Key client personnel would normally travel to our factory in Padova, Italy to witness the testing in person, ensuring any faults can be rectified prior to the equipment being delivered. Due to travel restrictions in place as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Saipem were unable to send any representatives.

The solution

Innovo’s team of experts implemented a remote system for Saipem’s personnel to monitor FAT without travelling. The remote inspection and testing was shared via Microsoft Teams and the video streams were provided by two fixed and one mobile camera showing overviews and close-ups. The whole system was connected via wi-fi to a network that communicated remotely via a 4G protocol.

Wearing specialist Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Innovo’s inspectors remained at a safe distance from each other and used individual laptops to maintain social distancing. Audio via Microsoft Teams enabled all parties to communicate throughout.

The result

  • Remote inspection and testing system removed the need for Saipem to send a team to the manufacturing plant
  • Saved on the cost of flights and hotels
  • Eliminated the risk of COVID-19 infection
  • No delay in equipment FAT.
